As a Worldwide Vets volunteer, you’ll help provide vital care to sick, injured, and abused animals in and around Cairo while immersing yourself in this vibrant country’s history and culture. You can join as a non-clinical volunteer and help with day to day care for the animals on the farm where the project is based.

In the streets and shelters of Egypt, countless cats and dogs suffer from malnutrition, injuries, and preventable diseases. As a volunteer you’ll help change that by assisting our veterinary team with vaccinations, parasite control, wound care, and life-saving treatments, giving these animals a second chance at life.
You’ll also have the opportunity to support our mobile vet clinics, caring for the horses, donkeys, goats, cows, and other livestock that local families depend on. By providing hands-on treatment and helping educate owners on good animal care and nutrition. You’ll make a lasting impact on both animal welfare and community wellbeing.
You can join as a clinical volunteer or a general volunteer. If you’re a vet, nurse, tech or student of these professions, you’ll assist with treatments and field clinics; if you’re general volunteer, you’ll play a key role in the day-to-day care of animals on the farm. However you choose to help, your time and compassion will make a real difference for Egypt’s animals and the people who love them.
CLINICAL WORK
During your stay at the Egypt Vet Clinic, you’ll be fully immersed in hands-on veterinary work, gaining experience in both small and large animal care. The main focus of your work will be dogs and cats, at our busy location in Cairo. You’ll assist with all aspects of the clinical workload, including consultations, treatments, spay and neuter surgeries, and any other procedures that arise.
Pre-vet / general volunteers: You’ll help care for the resident animals on the farm by helping with feeding, rehabilitation, maintaining enclosures, kennel cleaning and grooming horses. Alongside this you can partake in community education, getting dogs ready for treatments, and observing the vets in action. You’ll learn through shadowing and supporting daily clinic activities.
Pre-clinical vet students: You’ll be taught how to monitor anaesthesia, assist with giving treatments and medications, witness a range of wounds and diseases, help give health checks, and support vets during their work.
Clinical-year/final year vet students: You’ll have the opportunity to scrub in on surgeries, generally three to five per week, and receive surgical teaching during this time. Help inject, clip, scrub and monitor patients, assist with consults, and gain ample hands-on experience.
Qualified vets: assist based on your skill set and confidence. New graduates looking for clinical development to will work alongside our vets, developing more skills and confidence. Vets with experience are welcomed to be involved in surgery, treatments, and teaching new skills to our vets, students and nurses.
It is not uncommon for us to need to humanely euthanase animals to prevent suffering and we expect volunteers to be understanding of euthanasia on humane grounds. Working hours are from Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturdy off to enjoy sightseeing which we can help you arrange. We generally work 8.00 am - 5.00pm. Occasional emergency cases may come in later than that for which your assistance may be required.

ACCOMMODATION
Your accommodation is located opposite our clinic, on a large, lush farm oasis, called Al Sorat Farm. You’ll stay in a large flat, on the first floor, with three bedrooms, each containing three beds and equipped with mosquito nets, fans, and air-conditioning. Two rooms are en-suite, plus there is an extra bathroom. The house has a large well equipped kitchen, a comfortable living area with sofas and a dining table, and a rooftop balcony perfect for watching the sunset or stargazing. You can even see the pyramids from up there! Due to shaky Egyptian power supply, we can have short but regular power cuts, so a power bank is handy.
There is Wi-Fi in the volunteer house, but it’s slow, so downloading films before coming is a smart plan, as is having your own sim card, e-sim, or roaming access for Egypt. Meals are not included in the volunteer fee. We will take you to the local shop on arrival where you can buy local produce and supplies. It is a 3 minute drive or 10 minute walk. If you have dietry requirements or allergies, please chat to us before booking; we may suggest bringing some items not available locally.
LOCATION
The clinic is in a quiet and rural area on the South side of Cairo, about 40 minutes from the main city and the famous Pyramids of Giza that date back over 2,500 years. You will be just around the corner from Saqqara Pyramids. Generally we finish clinic work between 2 and 4, and have a 2 day weekend. In your free time you can visit these iconic landmarks viewing them from the desert landscape and even entering inside the Pyramids of Giza, following a guide and stooping low to traverse the narrow passageways, and visiting the beautiful stone sphinx. The world class Cairo Museum will wow you with ancient relics, mummification jars, solid gold decoration, preserved mummies, and ancient tools and pottery. Nile river cruises and Cairo’s cosmopolitan bars and restaurants ensure you will never go without something to explore.
Before or after your stay with us you can independently arrange trips further afield to places like Luxor to visit the mighty temple Karnak, or the Valley of the Kings, an intricate maze of tombs out in the desert with vividly coloured wall paintings and carved hieroglyphics. This includes the tomb of the famous Tutankhamun. There is also the beach town of Hurghada where you can snorkel or dive in the Red Sea, renowned for world class marine life including dolphins and stingrays.

In order to provide you with a fun, safe and rewarding stay, we have a project fee to cover your accommodation and all transfers when staying with us. This cost also allows you to be covered by our public liability and professional indemnity insurance.

PROJECT SPECIFICS

QUALIFICATIONS: Vet Students of all years
This project counts towards your training as pre-clinical EMS or Clinical EMS
FITNESS REQUIREMENTS
Due to the isolated nature of our locations, and the demanding nature of our work, a certain level of fitness is required to join this project. While we try to make our work as comfortable as possible, there are times when physical tasks are necessary to ensure safety and efficiency.
As such, you should be able to:
Climb up and down from a high pickup truck
Comfortably run 50 metres
Walk 1 kilometres over rocky and uneven ground
Not suffer from severe or unmanaged depression or anxiety
If mental or physical challenges prove problematic to safety, attendees will be required to sit out of activities, and in severe circumstances, we reserve the right to terminate a stay based on incorrectly or undisclosed disabilities. If you have a history of physical injuries, disabilities, or mental health conditions and would like to discuss your fitness to attend, we encourage you to apply and highlight this in your application form. We’re more than happy to have a conversation with you, and always do our best to be inclusive and accommodating.
START DATES
Volunteers fly in and out of Cairo Airport, and need to arrive Sunday evening or in the early hours of Monday morning. Departure is on Sunday. Flight times are often very late at night, but don’t worry, we can be there to meet you. In 2026 the set duration is 2 weeks. In 2027 you can stay any duration up to 8 weeks (12 weeks for qualified vets).
